Cybercrime is becoming so prevalent, police are struggling to keep up.

Crooks are getting away with crimes such as identity theft, purely because police don’t have the resources to investigate all the offences.

A report from the Institute of Criminology found that in one year, there was close to 1.6 million victims of cyber identity theft.

But only 35,000 prosecutions.

Cybersecurity groups are lobbying the NSW Government to boost funding for the Police Cyber Crime Unit.

Detective Inspector Gordon Arbinja, Commander of the cybercrime squad tells Ben Fordham it’s “advancing crime-type”.

“We know now that it is such a priority that we’ve got our first stand-alone cybercrime squad in Australia.

“The thing I can tell every person is that you should never share your personal information.”
